Market Rasen Cub Scouts

Badges worn on our uniforms back in the 1980's. Thank you to Mark Bell for his contribution.

The first mention I have found to date of Scouts in Mkt Rasen, is from the Lincolnshire Chronicle in September 1910, (just 2 years after the scouting movement was formed) when the troop were camping at Mablethorpe. The Scoutmaster then was A..B. Parkinson who later owned a clothes store at 18 Queen Street. On the right are a couple of photos from the 1980s when the Scout Hut was on De Aston Fields, Willingham Road. This was quite derelict as I remember and we moved to an new Scout Hut to the rear of the Primary School off Kilnwell Road in June 1984

Market Rasen Operatic Society

To the left is an advertisement for a performance of "The Gondoliers" by the Operatic Society in 1926. This was also the first production that was performed when the society was formed in November 1906.

The photo above shows the list of performers from the poster.

Many thanks to David Layne for the poster. David's uncle George Frank Layne (as seen on the poster above but spelt "Lane") was the owner of Layne's Garage in the Market Place.

Market Rasen Rotary Club

I wondered if this was given to the retiring President at the time. I also wondered if that retiring President might have been Albert Rhoades?

Market Rasen Choral Society

Market Rasen Choral Society - earliest mention found to date was in 1859 when they performed at an event held by the Mechanics Institute. Between 1861 and 1880 the society disbanded and in 1881 the Stamford Mercury reported that there was an attempt to reform. This appeared to eventually happen as the society is still going today.
