De Aston School Homework Journal Winter Term 1918 and blazer badge from the 1960s. De Aston School named after Thomas De Aston, a medieval Canon of Lincoln and Archdeacon of Stow. In 1397 'Thomas De Aston's Charter' provided an endowment of property for the building and maintenance of Alms-houses near Caenby Corner on Ermine Street. This school, whose "handsome Gothic brick buildings" built by Wallis of Market Rasen, were intended "to bring prestige to the town of Market Rasen" It was on October 12 1863 when De Aston opened it's doors for the first time - with just 11 boys on roll under headmaster Revd. Frederick Prentreath.
Information to be added
The larger of the shield badges was given to pupils when starting De Aston School. At time of writing, I am unsure when this began but I know it was done during the 1970s-80s. The example shown here is the badge I received in Sep. 1986 when I started at De Aston. De Aston was very active when it came to Comic Relief with both staff and pupils participating. As you can see this badge is from 1989. I remember getting involved in sponsored walks, bike rides, and even sprayed my head red like a tomato as was the icon for the event one year. The smaller badge and the scarf were offered to pupils to purchase as part of the 150 year celebration of the school being open in 2013 . Many thanks to the Sherlock family for this kind donation.
To the left is an invoice from 1919 highlighting the cost of boarding at De Aston School for 1 term in 1919. Note the list of chargeable categories - Greek, Dancing and Ammunition!!?
Just a selection of the postcards that I have showing De Aston School. Notice the difference in the top two pictures, how the school quickly grew and has continued to do so.
My old school PE t-shirt from Market Rasen C of E Primary School in the early 1980s. The School on Mill Road replaced the old Modern School in the early 1970s. Prior to this, the Primary School was at the Willingham Road / Pasture Lane site
A wonderful little photo album from the schoolboys of the C.E. Boys School on Willingham Road, to HeadMaster W.G. Evison - a gift to him from them for his birthday 1928.
Unfortunately there are no names to the photos, perhaps some of you might recognise some of these young faces!
