Watchmaker & Jeweller - Elizabeth Butler

Elizabeth Butler was a Jeweller from Towcester who first appeared in Market Rasen in the 1901 census age 45.

She resided and worked at the Jewellers owned by J.W Gibbins at 33 Queen Street.

Although I have not discovered exactly when, somewhere around 1904, I am under the impression that Miss Butler took over Mr Gibbons’ business, as all Mkt Rasen adverts for J.W. Gibbins ceased, he was declared bankrupt in the October of 1904, and trade directories soon after started citing Miss Butler as the Jeweller at 33 Queen Street. She left this address somewhere between 1919 and 1926 (according to trade directories) when Robert Smith (Grocer) was seen there.

The photo above shows her shop in Queen Street. Although a little blurred, you can make out her name on the sign above the door.

Watchmaker & Jeweller - Will Colbeck

Will Colbeck opened his Jewellery shop at 28 Queen Street in October 1904. The address known as a Jewellers right up until the 1980s. Known as "The Jewel Box" he ran the shop until his death in 1924 aged just 44. His widow Wilhelmina carried on the business until her death in 1933 aged just 46. Also around the same time their daughter Jessie was a hairdresser next door at number 26 Queen Street
